Hyderabad: Telangana’s GSDP is now growing at about 12 per cent and the state has conditions ripe for a massive incremental jump in growth, mainly aided by AI, said industries and IT minister D Sridhar Babu.
Giving the keynote at the ‘AI Global Summit’ on Thursday, he said: “Telangana is not merely participating in this AI revolution but leading it.”
At the heart of Telangana's AI strategy is the establishment of the AI City, a 200-acre hub near Hyderabad, dedicated to AI research, development, and application. This project is poised to place Telangana at the epicentre of global AI innovation, offering cutting-edge compute facilities, expansive data, and robust connectivity.
"This AI City will be the cradle of ground-breaking advancements, solidifying our status as a technological powerhouse. We also plan to launch an AI school in our AI city," he said.
In the interim, Telangana has partnered with the World Trade Centre in Shamshabad to provide two lakh square feet of office space for AI-driven companies, ensuring they can commence operations swiftly while the AI City takes shape.
Telangana signed 26 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with reputed players in the private ecosystem including academic institutions, big-tech companies, startups, and not-for-profit organisations. These MoUs were across compute infrastructure, centre of excellence, skilling, impact assessment, start-up innovation, generative AI, research and collaboration, and data annotation.
The state is committed to establishing a robust AI governance framework that balances innovation with ethical responsibility. "We are not creating these policies in isolation. We ensure our AI policies are cutting-edge and also grounded in wide perspectives," he said. The proposed framework will also include stringent regulations to prevent AI misuse, such as deep fakes and AI-driven misinformation, safeguarding democratic processes. The state will follow Japan’s example of balancing ethical AI, he said.
Later speaking to the media, he said the two-day event is to sensitise, educate, and bring awareness. It will be used to ensure that qualitative services are delivered. Education, healthcare and others will be key. The feedback from the summit will be used for the AI roadmap.
“The government has a vision to make Telangana into a trillion-dollar economy in the future. We are growing at almost 12%. If we can really take a leap from here, we can become a one trillion economy. It is a big dream. We will put our best efforts to get as close as possible,” Sridhar Babu said.
On equations with Karnataka, which is also under Congress regime, Sirdhar Babu said: “We will be going on friendly terms. But competition will be there. We will try to attract investments, new technologies and would like to scale up. We want to be in the forefront. We will showcase the stronger points of Telangana. The corporate leaders will decide from which state they can derive maximum mileage for their Industries to grow,” he said.
On the status of Foxconn factory at Kongara Kalan, he said the first phase of the unit will be operationalised soon. “And they are very positive to expand,” he said.
“A company has many verticals. One vertical may come here and the other may go to another state,” he said on a query on the reports of Kaynes Semicon deciding to set up ‘outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The project was touted to come up in Telangana.
“We are here to build our economy. We are here to invite industries to partner with the state of Telangana. We have confidence in companies. We will not have knee jerk reactions. It is only eight months or so we are in power,” he said.
