AICC appoints Mahesh Kumar Goud as TPCC president
Hyderabad: The Congress high command on Friday appointed Bomma Mahesh Kumar Goud, a Backward Class leader, as president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), to replace Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who led the state unit from despair to victory during his three-year tenure.
The announcement was officially made by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), marking the culmination of a two-month long process to finalise the new leadership for the Telangana unit. Revanth Reddy’s tenure had ended in July. Goud is his close associate.
Reacting to his appointment, Goud thanked the leadership and expressed his deep gratitude for placing their trust in him. "I will work on these great responsibilities entrusted by the party with sincerity and dedication, and I am committed to further strengthening the party," Goud stated.
In a heartfelt note at the end of his TPCC tenure, Revanth Reddy said he felt blessed at having the complete trust of party leader Sonia Gandhi and said Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra had transformed the mood in the country, “ removing the aura of darkness and bringing love and hope to every Indian.”
Mahesh Kumar Goud’s appointment comes as the Congress leadership seeks to balance caste and regional equations within the party and the government.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy represents the Other Castes (OC) category, while Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka belongs to the Scheduled Castes (SC) community. With the appointment of Goud, the leadership has ensured representation for the BC community as well at the helm of party affairs.
The decision to appoint 58-year old Mahesh Kumar Goud, MLC and TPCC working president since June 2021, was influenced by his extensive experience and longstanding dedication to the Congress. A native of Rahatnagar in Bheemgal mandal of Nizamabad district, Goud started his political career as the state general secretary of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) during his time at Giriraj College in Nizamabad.
Over the years, he has held various key positions, including as the Nizamabad district president, Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress, and chairman of the erstwhile AP State Warehousing Corporation.
Goud contested multiple elections unsuccessfully, but has handled several roles in the Congress as PCC secretary, official spokesperson, and general secretary. He has also been a key figure in the party’s election strategies, serving as convener of the Congress manifesto committee and member of the TPCC Election Committee.
His appointment as the TPCC chief is seen as a strategic move by the Congress high command to strengthen the party’s organisational structure in Telangana, especially in the context of the upcoming local bodies elections. Goud’s close relationship with Revanth Reddy and his strong connections with the Congress high command in Delhi have also played a crucial role in his selection.
The new TPCC chief will be responsible for steering the party’s efforts in Telangana as it prepares for the electoral challenges ahead. With his deep roots in the party and a focus on balancing regional and caste dynamics, party leaders and cadre were confident that Mahesh Kumar Goud’s leadership of the party unit would be pivotal in shaping the Congress’s future in the state.
In his message, Goud said he would always be available to party activists and leaders and vowed to serve as a crucial link between the party and the government, and to work tirelessly for the development of the state and the party's growth.
He also expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him, pledging to uphold the trust placed in him and to lead the TPCC with determination and integrity.
Goud specifically thanked AICC leader Sonia Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and K.C. Venugopal, AICC incharge Deepadas Munshi, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and minister Uttam Kumar Reddy.
He also expressed his appreciation to the ministers, MPs, MLCs, MLAs, DCC presidents, leaders, and party workers who have been working tirelessly to strengthen the Congress party in Telangana.
