Announce poll schedule for polls or face contempt: HC to BCI

If the court initiates contempt proceedings, it will have an adverse impact on the BCI, the court said. Giving a last chance for filing the poll schedule, the court adjourned the case to February 25

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday pulled up the Bar Council of India (BCI) for its silence on conducting elections to the Bar Council of Telangana (BCT) and delay in issuing the election schedule.

Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy cautioned the BCI not to put itself in an embarrassing situation where it has to face contempt proceedings for not complying with court orders.

The judge questioned the BCI counsel for not furnishing the schedule of the election, despite the court having issued the relevant orders on aprevious occasion.

“BCI’s role is very significant in regulating legal practice and education by way of setting standards of ethical conduct…. But, you are not following the same in conducting the BCT elections even though the term of the present governing body had ended over a year back”, the court observed.

If the court initiates contempt proceedings, it will have an adverse impact on the BCI, the court said. Giving a last chance for filing the poll schedule, the court adjourned the case to February 25.
