App Users Cautioned Against Installing APK Files
Hyderabad: Several WhatsApp groups are being used to distribute hazardous APK files under the guise of job offers. These files, once installed, can compromise the security of users' personal information and devices.
The malicious files are being sent with enticing messages promising employment opportunities. These messages often include details that appear legitimate, such as company names, job roles, and attractive salaries, to lure unsuspecting job seekers into downloading and installing the apps.
Upon installation, these APK (Android Package Kit format) files can access sensitive data, track user activity and even gain control over the device. This poses a significant risk to personal privacy and financial security.
A victim from Ameerpet said that the WhatsApp group’s admin had sent an APK, urging members to install the app to get regular daily-payment jobs. When the victim downloaded the APK, the app began disabling security features and the mobile showed pop-ups asking permission to disable Google Play Services.
“I realised something bad was happening, so I immediately removed the app and factory reset my entire phone”, the victim told Deccan Chronicle, while adding that despite doing so, his phone was constantly hanging up.
The cybercrime unit has received numerous reports from victims, who have had their personal information stolen and their bank accounts compromised. The officials are actively investigating these cases and working to identify and apprehend the culprits behind these nefarious activities.
Cybercrime inspector Naresh stated "We request the public to be very cautious. Never install APK files from unknown sources, especially those received via WhatsApp or other social media platforms. Always verify the authenticity of job offers through official company channels."
