Bathukammakunta rejuvenation works progressing in full swing; locals hail move
HYDERABAD: After decades of neglect, Amberpet’s Bathukammakunta is getting a fresh lease of life.
HYDRAA has initiated lake rejuvenation work, aiming to restore its 5.15-acre expanse while ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding community.
Officials have cleared wild bushes and overgrown trees from the lake area. Authorities removed the rubble and flattened the ground in the last two weeks.
“Excavation work is set to begin in a week, and our rejuvenation plans include natural methods to restore the lake, making it an eco-friendly initiative”, a HYDRAA official said. No demolition of structures or displacement of residents is listed.
The lake, dry for decades, will be excavated and reshaped to enhance its water-holding capacity. Officials also plan to introduce native plants along the lake’s edges to prevent soil erosion and improve biodiversity. They said that they are concentrating heavily on rainwater harvesting and silt removal.
Local residents welcomed the initiative. S. Anjali said, “My grandmother told me stories about how they used to play along the lake. It was once a beautiful spot where our elders spent time. I’m glad it is being revived. It will help reduce water logging during monsoons.”
Mohd Arif, a local, said “In due course, the lake could become a place where can relax and enjoy nature. It is still yet to be seen how HYDRAA will develop the lake premises without disturbing our houses. I hope they complete this soon.”
Once completed, Bathukammakunta is expected to benefit the neighbourhood by replenishing groundwater levels, improving the environment, and providing a recreational space for the community. “We are confident about our eco-friendly approach towards rejuvenating the lake, and we will set an example for future lake restoration projects across Hyderabad and Telangana”, an official said.
