BCs Want Pro-rata Quotas in Local polls: Telangana BC Panel Head

Nalgonda: State BC Dedicated Commission chairman Busani Venkateshwara Rao announced on Sunday that he would submit a report to the state government summarising the opinions of caste associations representing Backward Classes (BCs).

Speaking to the media after conducting an open inquiry at the Khammam collectorate, Rao highlighted a common demand among BC castes: the implementation of quotas in local body elections proportional to their population. Representatives from nomadic tribes explained their difficulties in enrolling their names in the caste census, a concern that will be addressed in the BC commission’s report.

Rao also addressed issues related to caste-based professions. He noted that while individuals from Vishwabrahmin and Vishwakarma communities engage in different caste-based occupations, he would recommend to the state government that all members of these castes be considered under their respective categories, irrespective of their professional distinctions.

When members of cooperative societies for weavers and fishermen raised concerns about the non-conduct of elections, Rao clarified that such matters do not fall within the commission's purview.
