Bengalis Celebrate Pohela Boishakh

Hyderabad:About seven lakh Bengali families across Hyderabad celebrated Pohela Boishakh with community gatherings, cultural events and traditional feasts. One of the main celebrations was organised at Country Club, Begumpet, where members gathered to celebrate Naba Barsha.
Pohela Boishakh marks the first day of the Bengali calendar and symbolises new beginnings and prosperity. Traditions include Haal Khata, or opening new account books, wearing red-and-white attire, festive meals and cultural programmes. The day coincides with Mesha Sankranti, marking the sun’s transition into Aries.
Biswajit Mukherjee, vice-president of the Hyderabad Bangalee Samity, said, “This association marks 85 years of its existence. The flavour Bengal was started by this Samity in the city. The celebrations are with high sprits. The gather wil make us greet and meet with our friends and relatives. The cultural events at the venue. Most relished is the traditional food.”
At Bangiya Sanskritik Sangha, celebrations centred on literature, music and art. Shillpa Chakraborty, a television anchor, said, "This Sangha is a 75 years old association. Since my childhood. I have been a part of the Bengali community. My parents joined the Sangha when they came to the city. The new years are mostly about literature, music and art, where Rabindranath Tagore’s poetry is discussed.”
“The current generation is more aspirational in creating their own content. This day will help them to learn more about our roots through creating the fusion in music or in their writings,” she said.
Sanjay Pan, vice-president of the Bengalee Cultural Association, said, “Hyderabad which embraces every community and culture of other states. Though we are away from our hometown. We feel like home, from morning onwards the greetings of Shubho Noboborsho. As usual we are fond of traditional food.”
