Bengalis celebrate Vishwakarma birth fete

Hyderabad: The birthday of Vishwakarma, hailed as the chief architect of the world, is celebrated in a grand way by Bengalis, especially craftsmen. Bedecked Vishwakarma idols are installed alongside tools and equipment in workplaces seeking divine blessings. After three days, the idols are immersed in the Hussainsagar.

The devout do not eat non-veg items with ‘kichidi’ doubling up as the special dish.
Deva Roy, a craftsman from Abids, said, “I had been to my native place recently in Bengal and brought along loads of sweets, which we used during the festival. We all gathered and celebrated the day.”
Lakshmi Pandit, who has been in the city for the last 20 years, said “Vishwakarma, also known as devshilpi according to Vedas. On this occasion, we dressed up traditionally with new clothes. We meet and greet friends and families.”
Chaya Roy said, “We arrange tools in front of the idol to grant us the skills required in our work.”
