Nizamabad: With urban local bodies receiving more funds from the state government and being far ahead of panchayats in terms of facilities, people from villages are shifting their base to urban areas, while those remaining in the villages aspire to upgrade their places into municipalities.
In keeping with this trend, there is a marked rise in the urban population in the undivided Nizamabad district. In the latest move, Bichkunda gram panchayat in Kamareddy district is all set to be upgraded to a municipality.
Apart from Nizamabad Municipal Corporation, Bodhan, Kamareddy, and Armoor have been municipalities for a long time. In recent times, the towns of Banswada, Bheemgal, and Yellareddy were also upgraded to municipalities. As per the 2011 census, Bichkunda gram panchayat had a population of 13,213, which has now increased to 17,480. Bichkunda will be upgraded to a municipality soon. Officials will soon carry out a survey in this border town.
During the BRS government, Bichkunda and Pitlam gram panchayats were proposed as municipalities, but the proposal did not materialise. After the Congress came to power, the proposal was expedited.
Jukkal MLA P. Laxmikanth Rao and Kamareddy district collector Ashish Sangwan started steps to upgrade the Bichkunda gram panchayat to a municipality. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Ravi, a trader from Bichkunda, said that development of the gram panchayat had been neglected due to a shortage of funds. "We are hopeful that urban local bodies will get more funds," he said.
