BRS Leads Regional Parties in Donations, Receives RS 154.03 Cr in 2022-23

HYDERABAD: The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has stated that the BRS led the pack among regional parties, having received donations of Rs 154.03 crore, a majority of it coming from 40 corporate donors. The corporate contributions amounted to Rs 138.97 crore, in 2022-23.

This figure was Rs 113.13 crore more than the Rs 40 crore that it received in 2021-22, the ADR said.

The BRS was followed by the YSRC in AP, which has declared receiving Rs 16.003 crore from five donations, down from Rs 20.01 crore in 2021-22. The TD declared receiving RS 11.92 crore, the third highest amongst all regional parties. The party had received RS 0.62 crores in 2021-22. The increase worked out to 1,795.69 per cent in FY 2022-23.

The AIMIM received Rs 24 lakh from 24 donors, the ADR data said. It had received Rs 1.56 crore in the previous year.

The ADR said that corporates/ business donors gave Rs 169.204 crore to regional political parties in 2021-22, against Rs 45.24 crore from 1,827 individual donors/

The report is based on the declarations of regional political parties, during the financial year 2022-23, as submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Political parties are required to provide details of contributions in excess of Rs 20,000 from any person in a particular financial year to avail 100 per cent tax exemption under Section 29C (1) of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951.

The 28 regional parties received Rs 216.76 crores in all, from 2,119 donations. Of this, 90.56 per cent or RS 196.31 crore, was received by five regional parties —BRS, YSRC, TD, DMK and CPI.

No donations have been declared by NPF, BJD, DMDK, GFP, SDF, INLD and JKNC for FY 2022-23.

The report said that cash donations amounted to Rs 21.45 lakh from 43 donations during FY 2022-23.

Based on the location of donors, as per their declared address, New Delhi contributed the highest donations of Rs 107.092 crore, followed by Rs 62.997 crore from Telangana and Rs 8.391 crore from Andhra Pradesh.
