BRS tops regional party donations with Rs 580 cr in 2023-24

Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has topped all regional parties in India by receiving the highest amount in donation — Rs 580 crore — during the financial year 2023-24, according to a 'contribution report' submitted by the K. Chandrashekhar Rao-led party to the Election Commission of India. The elections for the Telangana Legislative Assembly were held in November 2023.

The BRS disclosed that Rs 495.52 crore of its total donations came through electoral bonds, a mechanism that conceals the identity of the donors. This represents nearly 80 per cent of its total contributions, making it the largest recipient of such anonymous funding among regional parties in India.

The figures place the BRS far ahead of its regional counterparts. The YSRC reported donations of Rs 184 crore, including Rs 121.5 crore through electoral bonds. The Telugu Desam followed with Rs 100.18 crore, while the DMK received Rs 81.56 crore, of which Rs 60 crore came through bonds. JMM garnered Rs 11.5 crore via bonds, with an additional Rs 62.15 lakh in smaller contributions.

The BRS was the ruling party in Telangana for most of the financial year, except for four months after losing power to the Congress following the Assembly elections held in November 2023. The election results, which were announced on December 3, 2023, marked the end of the BRS's decade-long reign, which began in June 2014.

Interestingly, the Congress, which was in opposition for most of 2023-24 received donations worth Rs 24 crore from individuals associated with the Rajapushpa Group, a prominent real estate company known for its proximity to the BRS leadership.
