Call on 1930 to report cybercrimes: Rachakonda CP
Hyderabad: "There are no free lunches," Rachakonda police commissioner G. Sudheer Babu said on Thursday to explain that news of unexpected gains from unknown persons should not be trusted.
"Cybercrimes are costing victims lakhs of rupees," Sudheer Babu said, as he listed ten of the most-common cybercrime tricks employed by scammers -- fake TRAI officials calling, parcel stuck at customs, digital arrest, family member arrested, get rich quick trading, simple tasks for big rewards, credit card issued in victim's name, mistaken money transfer, KYC expired, and generous tax refund.
The CP urged citizens to report any cybercrime immediately through the helpline 1930 or the government portal at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
“While many victims are well-informed, the nature of these threats include impersonation and intimidation which can deceive anyone. If one finds themselves under any sort of threat, and if they cannot reach the police, contact friends or family who understand cybercrimes and immediately report it,” Sudheer Babu said.
Drawing inspiration from philosophers Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the commissioner emphasised the growth of technology as a factor for progress.
However, he cautioned that technology should be used ethically and responsibly, rather than being exploited for illegal activities.
