Caste census concludes, final report on February 2

Hyderabad: The caste census conducted across the state has been successfully completed. Two days after its draft report is submitted to the state government, the final report will be presented to the cabinet sub-committee on February 2.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy reviewed the progress of the caste census at a meeting with ministers and officials here on Wednesday. He applauded the officers and employees, who were involved in the process, for their efforts in successfully carrying out the extensive survey.

The caste census aims to provide crucial data to the state government for formulating welfare schemes for the marginalised sections. This massive door-to-door survey collected information on the social, educational, economic, employment, political, and caste demographics of the state's population.

The Chief Minister pointed out that this exercise had drawn national attention and appreciation. He stressed the significance of this data in empowering marginalised communities, stating that the collected statistics will aid the BC commission in determining the quantum of reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming local body elections.

Officials said that they had completed data entry and that the draft report would be ready within a day or two. The Chief Minister directed them to ensure that the final report is submitted to the cabinet sub-committee by February 2.

The comprehensive house-to-house family survey, officially known as the socio-economic education employment political caste survey 2024, commenced on November 6. It was completed across all districts in the first week of December.

Over one lakh employees, including enumerators, supervisors, and data entry operators, were engaged in the process under the overall supervision of the planning department.

The survey aimed to cover approximately 1.16 crore families in the state. Despite challenges, including locked houses and families unwilling to participate, data was successfully collected from over 96 per cent of the targeted households.

It was on February 4, 2024 that the state cabinet decided to conduct a caste census via a door-to-door survey within two months of assuming power on December 7, 2023. The state government passed a resolution in the Legislative Assembly on February 16 to undertake the caste census. On September 12, a cabinet sub-committee, consisting of six ministers spearheaded by Uttam Kumar Reddy, was formed to finalise survey procedures. On October 9, Revanth Reddy reviewed recommendations made by the cabinet sub-committee. The next day, the planning department, designated as the nodal agency for the survey, issued G.O. No. 18 outlining the complete procedures for the census.

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, ministers C. Damodar Rajanarsimha, N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Seethakka and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, government adviser K. Keshava Rao, former minister K. Jana Reddy, chief secretary A. Santhi Kumari, and senior officials from various departments participated in Wednesday’s review meeting.
