Caste Census Starts off with Confusion
Hyderabad: The first day of the caste census in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)’s Kurmaguda division was marked by confusion among enumerators. They were initially trained to collect detailed family information. However, later they were told to only paste stickers outside the houses with details like the house number, ward number and the name of the house owner, said Kurmaguda GHMC ward administrator K. Srinivas.
The actual data collection is scheduled to begin on November 9. Enumerators informed the public to keep necessary documents and information ready for a follow-up visit to collect family details. They also requested the residents to inform neighbors whose houses were locked. The lack of public awareness led to occasional arguments with residents, further troubling the process.
Enumerators began their work at 10 am and concluded by 5 pm, said Dasharatha Lakshmi, the GHMC area resource person for Kurmaguda. The enumeration team includes Anganwadi workers, self-help groups (SHGs) women, GHMC staff, teachers and the staff of other departments. A team of 10 enumerators is headed by a supervisor, and each enumerator has to cover 150 houses.
