CBI files case against UP firm for supplying poor quality bedsheets to SCR

Hyderabad: The CBI- Hyderabad has booked an Uttar Pradesh-based company, Bunkar Jantiya Hathkargha Sahakari Samiti Ltd (BJHSSL), for hatching a criminal conspiracy with South Central Railway (SCR) personnel to make wrongful gain in the supply of bed sheets. These transactions were conducted during July 2023 and November 2023.

According to a report submitted by CBI inspector S. Dhanunjay, the office of SCR’s chief materials manager (CMM) issued a notification for procurement of 3,39,542 handloom cotton bedsheets at an estimated cost of Rs 12.80 crore, with detailed specifications. The tender committee headed by the CMM evaluated 13 bids and recommended placement of purchase order (PO).

Sixty per cent of the required quantity (2,54,657 bedsheets) where to be procured from BJHSSL, L1 or lowest bidder, for Rs 7,86,58,454 on July 28, 2003.

The SCR vigilance department conducted checks and sent samples of the bedsheets to the textile committee here for the testing. The report disclosed that the supplies made by BJHSSL were not in accordance with the specifications. The vigilance department forwarded the report to the General Stores Depot, Mettuguda, and the principal chief materials manager (PCMM), SCR.

The deputy CMM conducted a joint inspection in the presence of representatives of Intertek India, a quality assurance provider, and BJHSS, Kanpur, and the samples were sent to RITES, New Delhi for testing. The tests conducted by RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Services) also revealed that the supplies made by BJHSS were not in accordance with the specifications. Based on a complaint, the CBI registered cases against the accused company and took up a probe.
