Chicken prices plummet amid flu scare

The bird flu scare has resulted in a sharp drop in the demand for chicken and their prices in the city.

Hyderabad: The bird flu scare has resulted in a sharp drop in the demand for chicken and their prices in the city. Poultry shops and markets are selling chicken at Rs 140-150 per kg, which shopkeepers say is the lowest in over two years.

In a related development, with people avoiding chicken due to health concerns, the demand for mutton and fish has shot up. Ramnagar market and Moti Market witnessed heavy rush on Sunday with people lining up to buy meat and fish. Mutton is currently being sold at Rs 900-1000 per kg, while a live fish was sold for Rs 600.

"Caught in the bird flu fear, people have turned cautious. Even regular customers are avoiding chicken and opting for mutton or fish," pointed out poultry vendor Mohd. Rasheed.

He added “There is no need for people to worry about bird flu. Even doctors and government officials are saying that there is no such threat.”

"Mutton sales have increased, but the high price is making it difficult for many buyers." said Ramesh Ch., a mutton shop owner.

Praveen Kumar, a customer at Ramnagar market, said “I don’t feel comfortable buying chicken. I am worried something will happen to my children, so I’m buying fish. The prices are high, but it is a safer bet.”

Despite assurances that well-cooked chicken is safe for consumption, the fear continues to affect sales.
