Christians Told to Fill in Religion Column

Hyderabad: The Christian community leaders welcomed the caste census, which is being carried out in the state by the ruling Congress. The Christian leaders called on all community members to participate in the census and urged them to ensure they fill in the fifth column in the form, which is for religion.

The community leaders explained that there are numerous Christians who converted generations ago and have church memberships while holding jobs secured through reservations.

According to the 2011 census, the Christian population in Telangana is 4.45 lakhs, about 1.27 per cent. However, Christian groups that conducted a survey after the Assembly election found a significantly higher number — more than 25 lakhs, which is estimated to be between 8 and 10 per cent of the population.

Telangana Christian Minority Finance Corporation chairman Deepak John expressed that “this is a much-needed survey. None of the previous governments came forward with such an initiative. This will provide the government with an accurate percentage of its citizens, which will help in the fair distribution of resources. If there is any social injustice, it can be rectified.”

Ysther Rani, a Christian leader, is circulating video messages on social media, urging Christians to tick the fifth column and mark their religion as Christian, even if they have reservations.

“This survey will not affect your jobs, even if you secured them through reservation. This survey will provide the government with statistics, ensuring that Christians have opportunities in political and legislative councils. The Christian population ratio will be officially recorded,” she said.

However, the senior pastor of Baptist Church, Narayanguda, Rev. David P. Gollapalli, said, “The clergy encourages everyone to make their own decision, but it is everyone’s responsibility as a citizen to participate in the survey. Each one should take part in this survey.”
