Hyderabad: Churches entertain, teach kids on vacation

Children learn about traffic safety, take part in Biblical music, skits

Hyderabad: Churches across the twin cities hosted Vacation Bible Schools (VBS) during the summer holidays, typically spanning a week or 10 days. These events feature songs, skits, stories, and music, all centered around Biblical themes. In recent years, social awareness programmes have been incorporated into these events, with one notable example being the interaction sessions organised with the traffic police to teach children road safety.

Each church tailors its programme differently, attracting anywhere from 100 to close to 1,000 children.

The Jar of Clay Fellowship in Bandlaguda Jagir, lacking sufficient numbers, collaborated with another church to ensure a vibrant event. According to Pastor Moses, attendees including Dhana Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi, Olivia, Prassana, and many others, gather at the church on Chapel Road.

The United Peoples Fellowship hosted a six-day programme, "Saul to Paul," which included traditional activities alongside written exams based on the book of Ephesians. Sister Joy Cherian expressed excitement over the children's eagerness to learn more during these sessions.

At CSI Wesley Church in Ramkote, the concluding event saw 300 children accompanied by their parents. Fifty teachers ensured the success of the programme. Breakfast was provided to the children throughout the 10 days and a grand dinner was organised for the closing ceremony, said committee member Peter Divakar.

The Baptist Church in Narayanguda focused on teaching songs and presenting stories in innovative ways to engage the children effectively.

At John Wesley Methodist Church in Goutamnagar, Malkajgiri, pastor Reverend Dr D.H. Paul commended the involvement of children, youth, and teachers. The youth contributed through skits and special songs, enhancing the overall impact of the VBS programme.
