Cattle die after suspected feed contamination

Kothur police registered a case following the mysterious death of seven cows and a calf at a dairy farm in Kummariguda village, with the owner suspecting that the cattle feed was intentionally contaminated.

According to the complaint lodged by a 39 year old woman, she has been running a dairy business for the past four years, rearing cows and buffaloes in a shed near her village. Two workers from Bihar, identified as Munna and another individual, were employed at the farm for the past month to look after the livestock.

Police said the workers routinely soaked cattle feed in a trough before feeding the animals. On June 17, the workers allegedly demanded money from the farm owner. When she told them payment would be made after a month, they reportedly prepared the feed as usual and later left without informing her.

The cattle were not fed on June 18. On Friday, while the soaked feed was being removed from the trough for distribution, a calf consumed a small quantity and died shortly afterwards. The same feed was then given to seven cows, all of which later died.

The complainant suspects that the missing workers may have mixed pesticide, urea or another harmful substance into the feed. Kothur police registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
