Hyderabad: In its first year, the Congress government has launched projects valued at over Rs 1 lakh crore as part of an ambitious plan to transform Hyderabad into a global hub by 2050, according to the state government’s performance report released as part of first-anniversary celebrations.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has prioritised the development and expansion of the Hyderabad metropolis, focusing on urban mobility, environmental restoration, and economic growth through advanced infrastructure and development projects, the report stated.
Key initiatives include the construction of elevated corridors and bridges, Metro Rail expansion, rejuvenation of the Musi River, creation of Fourth City etc. The 2050 Master Vision, introduced by the Congress government, aims to position Hyderabad as a leading global city, it said.
Major initiatives include: Elevated corridors and bridges, construction of a Rs 2,232 crore elevated corridor on Rajiv Rahadari Road in Alwal, Secunderabad; foundation stone laid for a Rs 1,580 crore double-decker elevated corridor on the Hyderabad-Nagpur National Highway; a Rs 360 crore four-lane bridge near Mir Alam Lake, ongoing development of six major junctions near KBR Park at Rs 826 crore to reduce traffic bottlenecks.
The second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project, with a Rs 24,237 crore budget, will add 76.4 km to the existing 69 km network. This includes connectivity to the airport, Old City, and emerging hubs like Kokapet and Patancheru.
To address public transport and flooding issues, the government purchased RTC buses and introduced free travel for approximately 50 lakh women under the Mahalakshmi scheme. Floodwater management through Rs 596.2 crore drainage upgrades and innovative water intake wells at junctions prone to waterlogging were initiated.
A significant focus has been placed on reviving Hyderabad’s water bodies and green spaces. Musi River revamp plans include setting up 39 sewage treatment plants (STPs) to clean polluted inflows and restore the twin reservoirs of Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar. An additional 20 TMC of Godavari water will be diverted for drinking water needs and ecological purposes. Bapu Ghat will be transformed into a national landmark with the establishment of an international Gandhi Ideology Center.
The state government is laying the groundwork for "Future City," a sprawling 30,000-acre urban hub with a focus on AI, life sciences, software, and healthcare technologies. Complementary to this initiative are Skill Development and Education. The foundation stone for Young India Skill University has been laid, and plans for a sports university are underway.
With regard to enhancing road connectivity, the state government has decided to construct the southern part of the Hyderabad Regional Ring Road (RRR), costing Rs 18,000 crore with its own funds with relying on Centre for the speedy completion of the project, which will connect key districts around Hyderabad.
The establishment of HYDRAA, an innovative system to protect city assets like tanks and canals in collaboration with police, traffic authorities, and urban bodies, showcases the government's commitment to effective governance, the report said. Additionally, significant allocations have been made for building new High Court premises in Budvel and constructing the new Osmania General Hospital at Goshamahal.
"The people of Hyderabad have welcomed the government’s proactive measures. With administrative efficiency evident in resolving decade-long land acquisition issues for infrastructure projects, the city is rapidly emerging as a model for urban development," the report noted.
