Cops Attacked While Trying to Evacuate Occupants from Miyapur Government Land

Hyderabad: In a bizarre turn of events, a mob of 2,000 persons, instigated by land sharks, pelted stones at police personnel who tried to vacate them during a massive showdown on a government land parcel in Miyapur spread around 600 acres and worth crores of rupees on Saturday.

Most of the crowd was from the city’s neighbouring districts. They descended on the land in Survey Nos. 100 and 101, Miyapur village, Serilingampally and divided themselves into groups. They pelted stones at the police and tried to damage their vehicles.

The injured cops, who initially moved to safer locations, came back with additional force and started retaliating.

While those present at the spot alleged that police resorted to violence, the cops said that they had only brought the situation under control when the crowd started pelting stones.

Several people from Hyderabad’s neighbouring districts, who thronged the place, demanded that as they were denied 2BHK houses by the BRS government, they now wanted to build their houses on the Miyapur land. A video and audio was also widely circulated in WhatsApp groups.

“In the video and the audio clips it was mentioned that whoever wants a piece of land or 2BHK houses could visit the Miyapur land and claim it,” said one of the protesters.

Senior HMDA officials, speaking to Deccan Chronicle, confirmed that the ones who arrived at the site were provoked by the encroachers.

“There is a Supreme Court status quo related to this land and no activity is allowed here,” G. Veera Reddy, HMDA estates and land acquisition officer, told the protesters. “If you build huts or demand land ownership, then you will face criminal charges. It will be contempt of court,” he warned.

Incidentally, some of the protestors have built a temple, temporary huts and set up stalls in the area.

It may be recalled that the state government had a couple of years back booked cases against two companies — Trinity Infraventures and Suvishal PowerGen — for trying to encroach this particular government land, which is presently under the control of the HMDA.

There are also other stakeholders claiming ownership of the property.

According to Cyberabad police commissioner Avinash Mohanty they were able to evacuate over 60 per cent of the protesters by evening.

“We have booked cases and seized vehicles. A probe is underway,” he told Deccan Chronicle.
