Cosplay Takes Centrestage at Comic Con
Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s Comic Con started on Friday with a full display of cosplay, drawing 100 cosplayers from across India, dressed in the intricate costumes of their favourite anime, comic book, and mythological characters.
From the classic heroes like Spiderman and Batman to anime characters like Guren and Hatsune Miku, the range was diverse. Even characters from Chinese anime, such as Smiling Li from Demon Hunter, were represented.
“Cosplaying for the first time seems a bit challenging to me but people are showing so much love for my character,” said Satya, dressed up as a Batman.
The growing popularity of anime and gaming was seen in the rise of cosplay culture, particularly among Gen Z. "People didn't know much about cosplay before, but now they're more enthusiastic," said Ajay, a cosplayer dressed as Sesshomaru. Animator Naveen Joseph, dressed as Wendigo, told that though Cosplaying is fun, it can be exhausting because the cosplayer has to be energetic the whole day.
There was also quite a few Indian characters this time. A cosplayer dressed up as Hanuman claimed that he feels blessed to dress up as the lord.
Annie and Siddarth, dressed up as Snow White and Hanuman, were also co-founders of the “Hyderabad Cosplay Club". Founded in July 2023, the club now consists of more than 150 cosplayers.
Despite the challenges in terms of wig work and makeup,, the cosplayers were united by their passion for their craft. They eagerly anticipated the weekend, expecting even larger crowds and more enthusiastic fans. "People are really excited," said a volunteer. "They're taking pictures with the cosplayers and enjoying the atmosphere."
