Hyderabad: A special drive carried out against the manufacturing of illicit-distilled (ID) liquor in 13 districts across the State yielded positive results with the sleuths of Prohibition and Excise department registering as many as 1,771 cases in a month and arresting over 1,720 people.

The sleuths also destroyed 1.10 lakh litres of jaggery in addition to seizing 295 vehicles. They imposed a fine of Rs.14.99 lakh on the ID liquor manufacturers. Following instructions from Prohibition and Excise Director (Enforcement) VB Kamalasan Reddy, the department conducted a month-long raid from January 16 to February 15 to stop the manufacture and flow of ID liquor.

It found that the manufacturing of ID liquor was in 25 mandals under 25 excise police stations in 13 districts of Telangana. In some areas, these raids were conducted with the cooperation of the police. The entire operation was conducted only after identifying ID liquor hotspots apart from illegal transportation of raw materials, suppliers, and the supply of jaggery and other ingredients. Reddy sought the cooperation of the people to curb the ID liquor menace in the State.
