Cyclists Aim to Make 50 Lakh People Peddle Their Way to Work
Hyderabad: Days ahead of World Bicycling Day, the cycling community in Hyderabad aims to become a 50-lakh group. The World Bicycle Day will be celebrated on June 2 at ORR Hyderabad Cycling Track from 6 am to 8 am.
The event will celebrate the construction of a world-class bicycle track in the city and put across a five-point request to the government to make Hyderabad a proactive pioneer in active mobility and make it a developed city to stand out in the world.
Santhana Selvan, the ‘Bicycle Mayor of Hyderabad’, told Deccan Chronicle: “We keep celebrating the World Bicycle Day every year, but this year our vision is to see our kids and grandkids walking, cycling or using public transportation for their commute to school and colleges, without any safety problems and parental supervision.”
Ravi Sambari, a member of Hyderabad Cycle Revolution, said, “We want to see more cyclists in the city. We believe active mobility through bicycling is the permanent, sustainable and long-term solution for a lot of the urban problems in our city, including pollution, traffic and health. We want Hyderabad to be the fastest-growing city in our country. Active mobility and sustainability are the solutions.”
World Bicycle Day aims to educate, enforce and empower pedestrians and cyclists' safety.
“I travel to the office every day using my bicycle. Using cycles can control pollution and save the environment by reducing the carbon footprint. It is an eco-friendly mode of transportation and is healthy. It’s a small contribution from my side to the future environment,” said Tirupathi Reddy, a Hyderabad-based cyclist.
The 10,000 strong community cycling community in Hyderabad targets to reach at least 50 per cent of Hyderabad’s one crore with the messaging about active mobility.
