Cyclone Fengal Intensifies, heavy rains for AP, Tamil Nadu

Visakhapatnam: A deep depression in the Southwest Bay of Bengal is swiftly developing into a severe cyclonic storm, posing a threat to the coastal areas of Sri Lanka and southern India.

Weather scientist Jagannath Kumar from the IMD in Visakhapatnam forecast moderate to heavy rains in Rayalaseema, Southern Coast and Uttaranchal districts over the next four days.
The system moving along the north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka approached the north Tamil Nadu coast by Wednesday evening. It is expected to approach Puducherry, Tambaram and Chennai by Friday night.
IMD issued weather warnings for five days ahead, predicting strong winds of 45-55 km/h with gusts up to 65 km/h across South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. Fishermen are advised against venturing into the sea due to danger warnings at all ports in the state.
It said the severe cyclonic circulation was moving north-northwest at 8 km/h. Heavy rains are expected in Nellore and Tirupati on Thursday, and very heavy rains are anticipated in Annamaya, Prakasam, Chittoor, Nellore, and Tirupati districts in the next two days. Uttaranchal may also experience moderate to heavy rains on Nov 30.
Skymet weather tracking agency said Cyclone Fengal, named so by Saudi Arabia, was located approximately 550km southeast of Chennai and shifting northward while gaining strength. Satellite imagery indicated favourable conditions for its intensification. However, cooler coastal temperatures and dry air intrusion may impact its development.
Heavy rainfall was recorded in parts of Sri Lanka and moderate rainfall in coastal regions of Tamil Nadu.

The unique coastal orientation of south coastal Andhra Pradesh makes it difficult to precisely predict the storm's landfall time and location, weather tracking agencies said.

The deep depression is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by Thursday, as it continues its north-northwest trajectory toward the Tamil Nadu coast while skirting Sri Lanka, weather agencies said.
