DCA raids quack’s clinic in Warangal; Seizes Antibiotics, Steroids

DCA booked cases against 147 quacks since Jan.2024 for selling medicines illegally

Hyderabad: Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) raided a quack’s clinic in Warangal and seized drugs stocked for sale. Since January 2024, the DCA has registered cases against 147 quacks for the illegal stocking and sale of drugs.

Following information, the DCA officials raided the premises of a quack identified as Gaddam Srinivas at Urus Warangal for conducting clinical practice without proper qualifications at his clinic and detected 14 varieties of medicines, including antibiotics, steroids, analgesics, etc. stocked at the premises without a drug licence. The stock worth Rs.10,000 was seized, DCA Director-General VB Kamalasan Reddy said on Thursday.

The DCA officials detected several antibiotics including Gentamycin at the clinic. Indiscriminate sale of antibiotics by unqualified persons may have disastrous consequences on the health of the public, including emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

Officials found steroids including Dexamethasone at the clinic. Misusing steroids can have serious health consequences, including immune system suppression, hormonal imbalances, muscle and bone weakness, cardiovascular problems, and psychological effects. The indiscriminate use of steroids poses significant risks to public health.

The DCA officers collected samples for analysis. Further investigation will be carried out, and action will be taken as per the law against all the offenders. The wholesalers and dealers who supply medicines to such unqualified persons, who are stocking and selling drugs without a drug license, are also punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, and stringent action shall be taken against such wholesalers and dealers.

The wholesalers and dealers shall mandatorily ensure that the recipient entities hold a valid drug license before supplying medicines to them. The DCA issues drug licenses for the stocking and selling of medicines in accordance with the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Stocking drugs for sale without a drug license is punishable under the Act with imprisonment for up to five years.
