Deep Brain Stimulation surgeries performed in 24 days, setting a new record

The surgeries were led by Dr Dhanunjaya Rao Ginjupally, neurosurgeon with international expertise in advanced DBS techniques

Hyderabad: In a first, 25 asleep deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgeries were performed in 24 days at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, including two surgeries in a single day. A statement said this feat was a significant leap in neurological care, particularly for patients with movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, essential tremors, and dystonia.

The surgeries were led by Dr Dhanunjaya Rao Ginjupally, neurosurgeon with international expertise in advanced DBS techniques. “Our goal was to combine precision, patient comfort, and faster recovery. Asleep DBS surgery achieves all of these,” Dr Ginjupally said, explaining that the surgeries were performed under general anaesthesia using advanced imaging technology for precise electrode placement.

This approach, which eliminates the discomfort of awake procedures, is further enhanced by AI-based micrometric targeting and brain-computer interface systems. Apollo’s Fast Track DBS model has also allowed patients to be discharged within 24 hours, reducing hospital stays without compromising on safety or outcomes, the statement said.

“Achieving 25 surgeries in such a short span underscores our commitment to excellence,” said Dr Ravindra Babu, Director of Medical Services at Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad. He added that the innovation addresses the growing burden of movement disorders in India, with over one million Parkinson’s patients in the country. The achievement coincides with World Movement Disorder Day on November 29.
