Bhupalpally Transport Officer Killed While Supervising Seized Vehicle

District Transport Officer (DTO) Venkanna dies on the spot after being hit by coal tipper while inspecting vehicles near Chelpur.

Ganapuram (Bhupalpally): Bhupalpally district in-charge district transport officer (DTO) Venkanna died after being hit by a coal-laden lorry that was allegedly being driven at high speed, while on duty near the RTO office in Chelpur of Ganapuram mandal on Monday morning. Venkanna had assumed charge only on June 4 following his transfer from Jagtial district.

According to police and eyewitnesses, Venkanna was conducting a routine vehicle inspection in Karkapalli when he seized a harvester operating without valid documents and directed it to the Chelpur RTO office. After reaching the office premises, the officer parked his vehicle by the roadside and was supervising the movement of the seized harvester into the compound.
At that moment, a speeding coal-laden lorry approaching from the Bhupalpally side reportedly went out of control. Despite attempts by Venkanna and his staff to stop the vehicle, the lorry rammed into the harvester and the parked official vehicle before running over the officer. Venkanna sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.
Police rushed to the scene on receiving, inspected the accident site and registered a case against the lorry driver for alleged negligence. An investigation is underway. Police have booked a case of a road accident.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep shock over Venkanna's death. He assured the bereaved family of all possible government support, according to a release issued by the CMO.

Revanth Reddy instructed joint commissioner (transport) Chandrashekhar Goud to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident and submit a report.

Colleagues said he had recently discussed plans to relocate with his family from Hanamkonda to Bhupalpally.
District collector Rahul Sharma and superintendent of police Siri Shetty Sankirth paid floral tributes to Venkanna at the collectorate. Transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar spoke to collector Sharma over the phone to enquire about the incident and assured support to the bereaved family.
