Elderly Passenger Killed as Pilgrims’ Bus Catches Fire in Mathura

Mathura (UP): An elderly passenger lost his life when a private bus carrying pilgrims from Telangana to the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh caught fire on Tuesday, police said. The incident occurred at the Vrindavan Tourist Centre, where the bus was parked.

According to Additional SP City Arvind Kumar, the bus was carrying around 50 pilgrims en route to Prayagraj for a holy dip at the Maha Kumbh. The group had stopped at Vrindavan on Tuesday evening, and while some pilgrims visited nearby temples, others stayed back to prepare food.

Amid this, sparks were noticed coming from the bus, which quickly escalated into a massive fire. Emergency services, including police and fire teams, were immediately alerted. One of the pilgrims raised an alarm, pointing out that an elderly man, identified as Dhrupati, was still inside the bus. Tragically, the fire engulfed the vehicle before he could be rescued, and he was found dead.

A fellow passenger claimed that Dhrupati was smoking a beedi and had chosen to stay in the bus while others stepped out. It is suspected that the lit beedi might have caused the fire, although investigations are ongoing.

Senior police officials arrived at the scene to oversee the rescue and investigation efforts. The body has been sent for post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death, Kumar said.
