Enrollment ratio among ST school students hovers between 97.2 and 83.8 in Telangana

Girls outshine boys at higher secondary education level

Hyderabad: The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) among Scheduled Tribes (ST) at the school education level from class I to 10 hovered between 97.2 and 83.8 in Telangana in 2023-24, according to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA).

The total GER at the primary level from class I to V is 97.2 with boys registering 97.8 and girls 96.6 ratio. At the upper primary level from class VI to VIII, the total GER is 98 with boys registering 98.1 and girls 97.9 ratio.

At the elementary level from Class I to VIII, the GER is 97.5 with boys registering 97.9 while girls 97.1 ratio. At the secondary level from Class IX to X, the GER is 83.8 with boys recording 82.6 and girls 85 ratio. However, girls outshine boys at the higher secondary education level from class XI to XII. The total GER is 74.8 with girls outshining boys registering 79.3 as against 70.7 ratio of boys.

Replying to question on literacy rate among tribal women posed by an MP D Ravi Kumar in Lok Sabha on Thursday, Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey said the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) has taken many steps to address the low literacy and education rate among tribal women.

Development of tribal women has been a major focus of all MoTA schemes. Three Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) and Scholarship Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), emphasises on tribal girls so that low literacy will be removed from this communities.

The Ministry is also implementing the scheme of “Grants-in-Aid to Voluntary Organizations working for the welfare of Scheduled Tribes” under which the grants are provided to the Non-Governmental Organizations and voluntary organizations working in the sector of education, health and livelihood. The grants are provided after their online application, providing relevant information, duly recommended by the concerned State Government or Union Territory administration.

Under the scheme, for strengthening education of ST girls in low literacy districts, there is special focus where ST population is 25 per cent or more and ST female literacy rate is below 35 per cent as per latest census.
