Farmer Couple’s Suicide Bid Foiled
Suryapet: Locals intervened to prevent a farmer couple from attempting suicide at the IKP paddy procurement centre near Annaram in Thungathurthy Mandal. The couple, Gogulothu Keema Naik and his wife Punnamma, residents of Annaram village, were distressed over issues related to the sale of their paddy crop.
Keema Naik reported that he had taken the paddy harvested from his two acres of land to a rice mill in Tirumalgiri. However, the mill owner refused to purchase the crop, citing low quality. Following this setback, he brought the paddy to the IKP procurement centre on Sunday.
At the procurement centre, the couple alleged that millers were not adhering to government guidelines and were purchasing paddy below the minimum support price (MSP). Frustrated by the situation, they decided to take an extreme step. Fortunately, locals present at the site noticed their distress and intervened, preventing the suicide attempt.
