Father, son drown to death in Langar Houz lake

Hyderabad: A man drowned in Langar Houz lake while he was trying to save his 14-year-old son from drowning in the lake on Wednesday.
The incident occurred around 3 pm when Mohammed Kareem, 30, an outsourcing employee of GHMC, and his son Mohammed Sahil, 14, a Class IX student, were cleaning debris from the surface of the lake, Golconda ACP Syed Fiaz said.
After Kareem heard his son Sahil shouting for help, he rushed to the shore and caught hold of his son. But he accidentally fell into deep water and drowned, Fiaz said.
Kareem, on his son’s request, had brought him to assist him as Wednesday was a holiday, police said.
“We immediately rushed to the pond, alerted the Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams, who rushed in and retrieved the bodies. Later, we shifted the bodies to OGH mortuary for post-mortem,” the ACP said.
Kareem, a resident of Kandikal Gate, is survived by his wife and two younger sons. We have initially registered a case of suspicious death under Section 194 of BNS and are probing into all angles of negligence. We will take stern action if anybody is found forcing the minor to work, the ACP added.
Meanwhile, AIMIM MLA Kausar Moihiuddin said, “It’s a case of negligence towards outsourcing workers by the concerned department. They neither monitor the work nor do they provide them with life jackets. I will approach the GHMC commissioner and the Hyderabad commissioner and demand an inquiry into the case and compensation for the victims’ family,” the MLA said.
