Female teacher attempts suicide against project
Warangal: Tension flared on Wednesday in Elkeshwaram village, Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, when farmers displaced due to the Chinna Kaleshwaram Project tried to die by suicide during a protest against forced evictions. Farmers blocked the ongoing construction of a canal under the project, demanding fair compensation for their lost lands.
For three days, the farmers have been appealing to officials for appropriate compensation. When construction resumed, protesters laid in front of JCB machinery, with some trying to consume pesticide. A female farmer, identified as Kamala, tried to die by suicide and was rushed to MGM Hospital by her family.
Farmers alleged that police, revenue, and irrigation officials, backed by heavy police deployment, are forcibly carrying out canal works while ignoring their pleas for compensation. They expressed frustration over losing their livelihoods and accused authorities of neglecting their fight for justice.
The farmers urged IT minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu to intervene and address their grievances before the project is completed, warning of continued unrest if their demands are not met.
