Hyderabad:The rape of a minor girl on a running train, which was reported on Friday, throws light on a growing and disturbing trend of filming sexual assaults.
However, this is not an isolated incident. Three days back, a woman was raped and abused by seven persons in Nagarkurnool. The accused had allegedly urinated on her face, all of which was recorded over the phone. She was further blackmailed that if she revealed the assault to anyone, the assault videos would be circulated everywhere.
In another case, a minor studying at a school in Gachibowli was sexually assaulted for several months. An accused recorded the sexual assaults and blackmailed her.
In 2022, a 17-year-old girl was gang-raped by five persons in a car at Jubilee Hills. Two months later, the parents of the victim approached the women’s safety wing, after finding video links of their daughter’s sexual assault on the internet.
The accused often record such videos to blackmail the victim later and continue assaulting them. The victims find themselves in a position of extreme vulnerability, where physical and emotional abuse aggravated by s fear of public exposure.
Speaking of the impact on the victim, G. Rajakumari, coordinator and counsellor at the Bharosa centre in Khammam, said “The rape in itself affects several aspects of a woman’s life, imagine having sleepless nights fearing their video would be out and be watched by people known to her.”
She further said, “Many of them complain of experiencing extreme fear while confronting people known to them, assuming that they might have watched the videos. It is a terrible position to be in.”
