Floods Claimed 33 Lives in Telangana: Ponguleti

Hyderabad: Revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said that heavy rain and subsequent floods over the past few days had affected approximately 2 lakh people across 358 villages. He put the death toll at 33.

To provide immediate relief, the government has established 158 rehabilitation centres, which housed over 13,000 individuals. Early intervention had saved 2,454 lives, he added.

Srinivas Reddy announced that the families of each of the deceased would receive Rs 5 lakh, along with an Indiramma house grant.

He was speaking at a high-level review meeting at the Secretariat to assess the situation following heavy rain and flood situation and outline the government’s response. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the disaster management, municipal administration, agriculture, panchayat raj, power, education, roads, housing, and irrigation departments.

Srinivas Reddy instructed officials to conduct a thorough assessment of the damage, ensuring accurate enumeration in the flood-affected areas. This data will be critical in preparing detailed reports to be sent to the Centre for additional support.

The minister stressed that the state government was fully committed to assisting every affected resident, emphasising, "No one needs to worry; we will support every last victim of this disaster."

Indramma houses will be provided to those whose houses were damaged. Each house will be constructed with a financial grant of Rs 5 lakh, and the process is to begin immediately.

Srinivas Reddy said the government was providing Rs 16,500 per affected family, and it was being directly deposited into their bank accounts. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had announced Rs 10,000 per family during his visit to flood-hit areas, but the amount was increased to Rs 16,500 after assessing the severity of the damage.

To help those who lost land records, property documents, Aadhaar cards and ration cards, the government has set up special counters at local police stations where affected individuals can apply for copies of the documents.

The government has directed collectors to purchase damaged grain through the civil supplies department at the minimum support price to support farmers, Srinivas Reddy said. The farmers are being paid Rs 10,000 each per acre for flood-affected land.

He said temporary roads had been built in remote rural areas as the floods had damaged infrastructure, including thousands of kilometres of roads. Srinivas Reddy emphasised the need for permanent solutions, particularly for major and medium irrigation projects, and instructed District Collectors to prepare necessary action plans within the next two to three days.
