Forest Minister Names Lion, Tiger Cubs; Inaugurates New Facilities at Zoo

Officials said these spacious enclosures, equipped with plants, ropes, sheds, and hideouts, are aimed at improving animal welfare and activity.

Hyderabad: Forest minister Konda Surekha named newly-born animal cubs and inaugurated several facilities at Nehru Zoological Park here on Monday. Two African lion cubs were named Avani and Ira, and the Royal Bengal tiger cubs Ishaan (male) and Vanya (female).

The minister also inaugurated a dome-shaped closed enclosures for primates, pheasants, and a sarus crane breeding ‘kraal’, and released a pair of animals into the enclosures. Officials said these spacious enclosures, equipped with plants, ropes, sheds, and hideouts, are aimed at improving animal welfare and activity.

The minister inaugurated the food court at the main entrance, which can accommodate over 200 visitors, along with a self-ticketing kiosk and luggage scanning machine supported under CSR initiatives. A WhatsApp-based ticket booking facility was also launched.

A two-day free health camp for zoo staff, conducted in collaboration with private hospitals, was inaugurated, offering tests such as ECG, blood sugar, and eye and dental check-ups. Chairing the first State Wildlife Board meeting, the minister reviewed developments and appreciated officials for enhancing visitor facilities and animal care.
