Forest to Fantasy: New Nature Park in Khammam

Puligundala to open for public by month-end

Khammam: Puligundala Project, situated in the Kanakagiri Reserve Forest Block of Khammam district’s Tallada Range, is set to welcome visitors as a Nature Conservation Park by the end of February. Developed by the forest department at a cost of Rs 76 lakh, the park’s maintenance will be transferred to the Zoos and Parks Authority of Telangana (ZPAT).

The park will offer eco-tourism facilities including motorboat operations, non-permanent eco-cottages, a wildlife safari, a bird-watching tower, and designated sites for star-gazing and night camping. Additionally, a 6-km jungle safari linking the Puligundala project to the Puligundam mini waterfall is in the works, along with a leopard watchtower.

Known for its scenic waterfall, rolling hills, and pleasant atmosphere, the area is expected to attract bird watchers with sightings of species such as the Indian paradise flycatcher, shikra, Indian roller, scaly-breasted munia, white-browed wagtail, little brown dove, russet woodpecker, and grey heron.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (CAMPA) Dr C. Suvarna inspected the project last week and provided recommendations to enhance its appeal as a tourist destination. The initiative is part of a broader eco-tourism project that aims to involve local tribal communities in park management. Khammam district collector Muzammil Khan noted that the project would create employment opportunities for local tribes and include additional amenities such as a cycling track, open gym, and adventure activities.

Located 11.5 km from Ramakrishnapuram on State Highway 42 connecting Khammam and Ashwaraopet, the Puligundala project is poised to become one of the state’s top tourist attractions due to its unique geographical advantages.
