Forum asks TGSRTC To Pay Rs 4 Lakh to Ex-Staffer

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission-I has ordered the TSRTC vice-chairman and managing director to pay Rs 4,05,168 to R. Krishna Rao, a retired Nalgonda regional manager of APSRTC (now TGSRTC), for deficient service. Rao, aged 55, retired in 1995, incurred medical expenses of Rs 3,60,168 for his treatment at Apollo Hospitals and AIG Hospitals after contracting Covid-19 in August 2022. Despite Rao's request for reimbursement, TGSRTC did not respond. TGSRTC argued that Rao was not a consumer and therefore his complaint was not valid, claiming that he should have sought treatment at the TGSRTC hospital in Tarnaka.

The Commission found that TGSRTC had sold medical facility cards to retired employees and did not dispute Rao's claim. As per the APSRTC Retired Employees Medical Facilities Scheme 2003, retired employees are eligible for medical treatment at APSRTC dispensaries and Tarnaka hospital, with specialist treatment covered up to Rs 1 lakh each or Rs 2 lakh collectively for the retiree and spouse. The Commission ruled that TGSRTC's failure to settle Rao's medical expenses violated principles of justice and fairness. They ordered TGSRTC to pay Rao Rs 3,60,168 for medical expenses, Rs 30,000 for mental anguish, and Rs 15,000 in costs.
