Free Power to Govt Educational Institutions in Telangana

Hyderabad: The state government on Thursday announced free power supply for all government-run educational institutions across the state. The energy department issued an order, confirming this move as part of the state’s efforts to ensure quality education for all. The scheme, which is aimed at reducing operational costs for educational institutions, is expected to come into effect immediately.

As per the modalities outlined in the order, the power distribution companies (discoms) will create an online portal that will allow all educational departments in the state to monitor their power consumption and billing. Each educational institution will have its own login, enabling seamless access to detailed data on energy usage, billing, and payments.

The energy department, in coordination with other government departments, will oversee the inclusion of educational institutions in the scheme. The respective secretaries will finalise a list of institutions to be covered and ensure they are registered on the online portal. The portal, in addition to providing monthly billing details, will also generate detailed reports showing historical consumption, billed amounts, payments, balance status, and more, which will help institutions manage resources efficiently.

The portal, integrated with the finance department, will facilitate seamless payment of power bills from the education budget to the discoms, further simplifying financial procedures.

According to sources, this move comes after consultations with the finance department and is part of a broader initiative to support the development of educational infrastructure in the state.

Durga P., a former principal of Government Girls Junior College, Nampally, said, "We've always had issues with the payment of bills, especially with bureaucracy taking up so much of our time, running pillar to post to prove we've paid bills and kids studying in the dark. This news is such a relief to all government institutions!"
