Genetic testing must for precision medicine: Experts

Hyderabad: The importance of genetic testing in achieving accurate diagnoses and personalised treatments for rare disorders was the focal point of discussions at a workshop organised by the department of medical genetics, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims), as part of the 62nd Pedicon conference.

Experts stressed that technologies like karyotyping, next-generation sequencing and optical genome mapping are crucial for identifying and managing genetic conditions.

Dr Prajnya Ranganath, organising chairperson, highlighted the need for medical practitioners to understand basic genetic principles to enhance patient care. “Genetic testing is no longer optional in clinical practice; it is a necessity to address complex medical conditions,” she explained.

Prof. Liza Rajasekhar, dean of Nims, inaugurated the event, emphasising how genetics has been reshaping modern healthcare. Dr Ashwin Dalal, guest of honour and head of diagnostics at Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, praised Nims for leading the effort to integrate genetics into regular medical practice.

Attended by over 100 delegates from paediatrics and other medical fields, the workshop covered a range of genetic testing techniques, exploring their relevance in both diagnosis and management. Discussions surrounded the need for education and awareness among practitioners to leverage these technologies for precision medicine.
