GHMC: 20 BRS corporators likely to join Congress

Hyderabad:Over 20 GHMC corporators from the BRS are likely to join the Congress soon. According to sources, the corporators have sent feelers to senior leaders of the ruling party.
Sources stated that the BRS corporators were attracted by the firm political stand of the Congress on several issues including implementation of welfare schemes including distribution of new ration cards.
Meanwhile, on Monday, BRS city corporators met at the residence of former minister and Sanathnagar MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav and discussed plans to table a no-confidence motion against Mayor G Vijayalakshmi in February.
As per norms, a no-confidence motion can be placed only after a urban local body (ULB) council completes four years of its tenure. In the GHMC, the four years will end on February 10.
However, the plans to displace the Mayor could turn into a flop show, the reasons being lack of BRS strength in the GHMC council, the new-found love between the Congress and the AIMIM and the BJP being in a tough place.
There are 197 members in GHMC Council, including 150 corporators and the rest are ex-officio members comprising 24 MLAs within the corporation’s jurisdiction, MPs and MLCs.
As per GHMC Act, it takes 135 votes to oust the Mayor.
Presently, the GHMC council has 146 corporators, with two AIMIM corporators having been elected as MLAs and a corporators each from the BJP and the AIMIM having passed away. The number of votes required to defeat the Mayor is 131, and the voting process is done through raising the hands.
To place the no-confidence motion in the first place, 98 members should give a written consent to the Hyderabad Collector.
Presently, the BRS has 42 corporators and 29 ex-officio members, totalling 71. This will be insufficient to table the motion.
If the BRS gains the support of the BJP, which has 39 corporators and six ex officio members, the number adds up to 116. This number is still short of the number required to secure passage of the no-trust motion,
The AIMIM has 41 corporators and 10 ex officio members. Members of the Congress stated that, the opposition's attempt to oust out Mayor will be in vain.
“The irony is that the BRS, which has lost the confidence among the people, is planning to place a no-confidence motion. There are no chances of them succeeding," said GHMC floor leader and Lingojiguda Congress corporators Daripally Rajashekar Reddy.
