Hyderabad: Ahead of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) council meeting on Thursday, ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Sridhar Babu held a meeting with the city mayor, MLAs, MLCs and other ex-officio members of the corporation and corporators on Wednesday.
With the BRS set to move a no-confidence motion against the mayor and the deputy mayor, the meeting discussed the future course of action by the party to counter it and utilise the time to resolve the pending grievances of the corporators.
Though the BRS does not have the numbers to place the no-trust motion in the first place, a source said that they have decided to play to the gallery and question mayor G. Vijaya Laxmi for shifting her loyalty to the Congress in the council meeting.
As per norms, a no-confidence motion can be placed only after an Urban Local Body (ULB) completes four years and the corporation’s four-year term ends on February 10. The BRS has decided to raise the issue in the GHMC Council on Thursday before placing it.
Gearing up for this, the GHMC has also decided to make sure marshals are in place to keep the house in order.
However, the opposition’s plan to displace the mayor will turn into a flop show as BRS lacks the numbers in the GHMC council and also due to newer equation between the Congress and the AIMIM.
There are 197 members in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) council including 150 corporators and the remaining being ex-officio members.
There are 150 wards in GHMC each represented by a corporator but with two corporators becoming MLAs and two passing away, the council has 146 corporators.
Unseating the mayor will require 131 votes. At present, the BRS has 42 corporators while 29 are ex-officio members. With 71 members in the council, BRS cannot remove the mayor and the deputy mayor.
To place the no-confidence motion in the first place, 98 members should give a written consent to Hyderabad collector. The BRS even lacks this number.
Mayor G. Vijaya Laxmi had recently told media that she doesn’t want to become mayor for the second consecutive term in 2026. She also said that she would not even contest as a corporator again.
In GHMC, the Congress has 24 corporators and five ex-officio members, the BJP has 39 corporators and six ex-officio members while the AIMIM has 41 corporators and 10 ex-officio members.
