GHMC records 1143 dengue cases so far

The number of dengue cases was 363 in July and 378 in August, marking the highest this year. Last year, the cases were 384 and 1,039, respectively. With only three malaria cases registered this year compared to eight last year, the disease is on a downward trend, says the municipal body

Hyderabad: The GHMC region has recorded 1,143 dengue cases so far this year as compared to 1,825 cases by the same day last year. The municipal body, in a press release, said its activities to manage the dengue situation were yielding results.

The number of dengue cases was 363 in July and 378 in August, marking the highest this year. Last year, the cases were 384 and 1,039, respectively. With only three malaria cases registered this year compared to eight last year, the disease is on a downward trend, says the municipal body.

In 2023, 17 chikungunya cases were registered and the number of these cases has reached 16 this year; there were eight chikungunya cases in July and four in August. In its press note, the GHMC said that they were focusing on source reduction, conducting anti-larval operations at breeding sites and fogging in areas with positive cases and slum localities.

This year, between August 5 and 15, health camps were conducted in 108 identified wards, covering 495 colonies that were hot spots for these diseases, in coordination with the medical, health and family welfare department, the municipal body stated.

The GHMC said 2,751 volunteers had been deployed to lead a student-led awareness campaign called ‘Join the Fight against Dengue’. Gambusia fish was being released in waterbodies and oil balls in stagnant points, ponds and nalas to prevent mosquito breeding. The GHMC asked residents to keep their surroundings clean and dry, remove stagnant water, maintain yards and educate children about the risks and precautions during the monsoon season.
