GHMC Seeks Rs 10,500 Crore Grant from Finance Commission
Hyderabad: The GHMC has urged the 16th Finance Commission to allocate Rs.10,500 crore to scale up the city's infrastructure and enhance municipal services. Of this Rs.7,500 crore is proposed to be used for providing innovative and transformative world-class infrastructure and Rs.1,500 crore for bioremediation and biomining of legacy garbage dump sites.
The GHMC has proposed Rs.200 crore for the protection and preservation of heritage structures, the preservation of lakes and prevention of urban flooding (Rs.800 crore).
In a letter to the Dr Arvind Panagariya-led Finance Commission, which is in Hyderabad, the GHMC said the estimated population in its jurisdiction was 1.4 crore and growing.
The GHMC said that it had spent around Rs.18,000 crore as capital expenditure in the last 10 years with borrowings of around Rs.6,000 crore and it is estimated to incur around 18,000 crore in the coming five years.
Though the nature and scope of services to be provided by the GHMC are very broad, the Finance Commission has recommended the grant only for two components — solid waste management and National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
