GHMC Steps Up Dengue Fight With Awareness Drives
Hyderabad: With viral fevers, including dengue and chikungunya, raging in the city, the GHMC is conducting awareness programmes in schools, colleges and colonies.
On Friday, the GHMC covered held awareness programmes in the Secunderabad zone which has 859 colonies in Musheerabad, Amberpet, Malkajgiri, Secunderabad and Begumpet. It also took up anti-larvae operations in the areas which recorded dengue-positive cases. Officials have deployed 54 portable fogging and 11 vehicle-mounted machines.
Fewer cases of dengue were reported this year than last year due to these efforts, the officials claimed. Officials also told the people that not all fevers were dengue fevers, and advised them to seek medical treatment.
The GHMC also conducted awareness campaigns in 117 colleges, 162 hostels and 561 schools. Hyderabad district collector Anudeep Durishetty and Secunderabad zonal commissioner N. Ravi Kiran visited the colonies and education institutes and inspected the programmes.
To control viral fevers, following measures were taken in the Secunderabad zone.
At schools, biology teachers were directed to explain to the school students about dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases and ways to prevent them. Doing door to door, GHMC staff removed mosquito breeding spots in the residential areas counselled residents on preventive measures.
Deputy commissioners and assistant medical and health officers inspected the anti-larvae and fogging operations as well as areas from where dengue was reported. Urban primary health care centres and basthi hospitals were also inspected for readiness to provide medical assistance.
