Godavari Board Official Accused of Harassment, State Seeks His Transfer

Hyderabad: The government has sought the removal of the member-secretary of the Godavari River Management Board, alleging harassment of irrigation department officials deputed to the board.

In a letter to Central Water Commission chairman G. Anil Kumar, the engineer-in-chief (general) of the irrigation department said that department employees deputed to the GRMB had complained to him about “inappropriate behaviour, verbal abuse, and unwarranted degradation” by the board’s member-secretary R. Azhagesan.

Anil Kumar said the employees approached him in his capacity as a member of the GRMB representing Telangana on the Board, and reported that the member-secretary’s behaviour created a hostile work environment.

Azhagesan’s behaviour, Anil Kumar said, “is not only detrimental to the well-being of the employees but also undermines values and professional standards.”

Such unwelcome behaviour, including use of “offensive language” by Azhagesan was also witnessed in GRMB meetings on various occasions with the target being one of the members of a committee formed to prepare a working manual.

The employees have also submitted a formal complaint to the GRMB chairman, Anil Kumar said in his letter, and sought Azhagesan’s transfer, and ensure all related grievances are resolved.
