Grant special facilities to employees cast vote for council byelection: CEO
Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vikas Raj asked all the private managements and authorities of business, trade, industrial undertaking or other establishments in the State to grant necessary facilities to their employees to cast their vote during byelection to the Telangana State Legislative Council from Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Graduates' Constituency on May 27.
Arrangements can be made for registered voters (employees) in Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Graduates' Constituency to enable them exercise their franchise, he said.
On Wednesday, Congress MLC Balmoor Venkat requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) to declare May 27 as a paid holiday in view of the Legislative Council from Warangal, Khammam and Nalgonda Graduates Constituency elections.
In a memorandum submitted to CEO, Venkat said the byelections to the Telangana Legislative Council from Warangal, Khammam, Nalgonda Graduates Constituency were scheduled to be conducted on May 27 on working day.
“Several graduates’ voters from the constituencies concerned represented to me that the election is on a working day. To facilitate graduate voters from the government, public and private sectors to cast their votes, the election date may be treated as a paid holiday in the Graduates Constituencies,” he said.
On furnishing a voter ID by the employee, the management should consider a paid holiday on May 27 so that the percentage of votes will also improve to select their candidates, he said in the memorandum.
However, there is no provision under Representation of People Act, 1951 to declare a general holiday under Negotiable Instrument Act for elections to State Legislative Councils. Hence, a request was made to the management to make special arrangements on polling day to facilitate employees to cast their vote.
