Grief as bodies of seven Kumbh pilgrims reach city

Hyderabad: A pall of gloom descended in Karthikeyanagar, Nacharam, on Wednesday as bodies of seven pilgrims, who were killed in a ghastly road mishap at Sihora in Jabalpur on Tuesday, while returning from Maha Kumbh mela after a holy dip at Prayagraj, were brought to the city on Wednesday. The seven were either related or known to each other for over a decade.

The deceased include Anand Kansari, Shashi Kansari, Ravi Vaishya, T.V. Prasad, Mallareddy, V. Santosh, and Raju.

A neighbour of one the victims, Srinivas Reddy said, “State government officials worked with their counterparts from Madhya Pradesh to bring the bodies in two ambulances after postmortem. Two of the survivors Balakishan and Nandu are in a local hospital undergoing treatment.”

It was more tragic for Santosh’s children.

“It was not even a year since their mother had passed away. Now the lives of Praneeth and Varun are shattered,” said their neighbour Anuradha P.

Swaroopa Rani, Balakishan’s wife said, “My husband was shifted to a private hospital after my brother reached the place. I will be going to Sihora to accompany them.”

Though she is relieved that her husband had survived, Swaroopa lamented the loss of her brothers in the accident.

She said, “We used to run a grocery store but as we all used to visit our children in the US, the business stated going down. Malla Reddy, Ravi, Balakishan, Santosh and Mallesh (who stayed back to attend to his mother) started a small finance firm.”
