Health Crisis Brewing in Rural Areas, Harish Warns

Hyderabad: The BRS on Tuesday warned of an impending health crisis in rural areas of the state, alleging complete neglect by the state government of funding needs of gram panchayats which have left villages without the resources even to take up basic cleanliness works.

Former health minister and BRS MLA from Siddipet T. Harish Rao, addressing a press conference, said the Congress government in the past seven months did not release any funds for gram panchayats, and sarpanches and village secretaries are no longer in a position to afford any works in the villages.

“Gram panchayats thrived under the BRS rule. Our government provided Rs 3,300 crore a year for gram panchayats, and for towns, we gave Rs 1,700 crore for upkeep. Why is this government bent upon weakening local bodies? If malaria, dengue or other diseases spread on account of the government neglect, who will be responsible?” he asked.
