Heavy Downpour Drenches City, Neighbouring Districts
Hyderabad: Golconda and its surroundings received nearly 9 cm rain as Hyderabad and its surrounding districts experienced strong thunder and lightning and heavy rainfall on Saturday evening, with intense downpours causing disruptions across the city.
The rain, which began around 6.30 pm, lasted for almost two hours and led to waterlogging and traffic congestion.
On noticing severe waterlogging or other related issues, residents have been encouraged to report them to local authorities for prompt action and immediate relief.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, the highest recorded rainfall was in Bhongir, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, at 103.3 mm. In Hyderabad and surrounding areas, Golkonda received 91 mm, followed by Digwal in Sangareddy with 90.8 mm, while it was slightly less at Khairatabad and Asifnagar. Vijayanagar colony, CESS ward office, Karwan and Mehdipatnam also recorded substantial rainfall, ranging between 56.0 mm and 77.5 mm.
Neighbouring districts were not spared either, with Bommalaramaram in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district witnessing 67.5 mm and the RDO office in Rajendranagar, Rangareddy district, recording 66.5 mm of rainfall. Patigadda in Secunderabad received 61.3 mm, while Algole in Sangareddy registered 60.5 mm.
These intense rains have been attributed to weather systems forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring more showers in the coming days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continuous rainfall in Telangana till September 24, issuing a yellow alert for various districts.
The rain, which began in districts like Yadadri, Bhongir, Rangareddy, Vikarabad and Siddipet around 5 pm, moved eastwards towards Hyderabad.
The GHMC deployed special teams at 141 waterlogging points to ensure that water drains quickly. Hyderabad in-charge minister Ponnam Prabhakar urged officials to remain vigilant, particularly near water canals and manholes, as there was a risk of flooding. He instructed civic and disaster response personnel to manage the situation effectively. The minister warned of possible heavy rains in the coming days and advised residents to remain cautious, especially those living in low-lying areas.
The IMD's forecast indicates that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal on Monday, due to a cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea. This is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Telangana, including Hyderabad.
The weather department has also noted the presence of another circulation over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal.
There has been growing concern over the outbreak of coughs, colds, fevers, and dengue. The GHMC has advised people to take precautions against waterborne diseases.
More rains forecast for next two days
